Art As Air
Project
Where would the world be without photographs to capture our every living moment and archive our experiences?
It's like asking where would we be without the air to breathe?
Especially in these changing times, digital photography has come roaring to the forefront of our societal experiences across all platforms of social media. There is new terminology and technology every day, with selfies becoming a way of life.
In a complete throwback, I recently came across a veritable treasure trove of film photographs I took in Italy in 1978 with my then trusty Fuji 35mm camera which exhibit the warmth and natural colors of that era of Kodak film. There are plugins these days that can render a semblance of this type of grainy sepia, but like vinyl records to music, the warmth and true tone is lacking in anything other than the original film medium.
Throughout my time on this planet, there has always been something about the physical action of taking photographs that invokes an emotional response, and I remembered how excited I was to be embarking on a never-ending adventure as an archivist of life.
Little has changed in the years since, and if anything, my passion for this art form has only grown. Having begun with 35mm and actually developing/printing film in my makeshift bathroom lab, the switch to digital has been like coming into the light with ease of use and all of the related ways to make photos spectacular.
Waiting for a batch of photos to upload at the end of a successful day in the field is always even better than being a kid lurking around the Christmas tree at 4am waiting for everyone else to get up so the presents can be unveiled. It's magic.
These photos I took as a younger person full of hope and naive delight make me feel just that once again.
So here in this gallery, I give you Rome and Florence, circa 1978.
Goditi la vita e vivi al massimo!
